5/22/2023 0 Comments Chrysalis by S.E. HarmonI did nudged the speed up to 1.1x just to ramp up the atmosphere slightly, the native 1.0x speed just felt a smidge passive and that slight speed increase just helped add a little more tension which I felt better suited the pace of the story. He suited the characters, has good cadence, inflections and intonations and it was easy to tell the characters apart. Narrator comment: Kai Rubio is a new narrator for me and I enjoyed his performance. It is part of a series so does end on a sort of a cliff-hanger. Once it got going the pace was good, the interaction between the characters was engaging (I really enjoy Christian\'s snarky personality) and the underlying story is intriguing as Christian tries to put the pieces of his old life together. Chrysalis was not at all what I expected, and is very different to what I thought it would be given the opening chapters. This book isn\'t a straight \"guy wakes up with amnesia\" story, there are sci-fi elements wrapped up in Chris\'s character\'s past. I went into this one knowing nothing more than the brief Publishers Summary which in the grand scheme of the story gives away very little! I found the story a little slow to start, but once Chris\'s secrets started spilling out I got sucked right in and by the 6 hour mark I was looking to see if book 2 is available and now I\'m really looking forward to more. Story comment: Good pace, likeable characters, interesting plot.

The book is described in the end as having “humour and heart”, and I agree. ✔ Though the topic is very serious, there is a lot of subtle humour throughout the story. This helps tremendously to know the timeline of the investigation and the aftermath. Rather than only having the plain numbered titles, there are tags such as “Day zero”, “Day one, morning”, and so on. ✔ The chapter titles worked nicely for the story. After a long stint of slow-medium paced books, this felt like a gust of fresh air. ✔ It was wonderfully fast-paced, despite the number of topics it covers. The story comes to us in the first person perspective of Violet. Like the real Ivan, the novel’s main character lives in a mall, the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, where he is billed as the “One and Only Ivan” as part of the mall’s daily circus. In her novel, Applegate transforms Ivan into a fictional gorilla who can understand and speak human language, and who tells his story through a series of short, poetic vignettes. The One and Only Ivan is based on the true story of a gorilla named Ivan, who was captured from the Democratic Republic of Congo and spent 27 years living in a cage in a mall before he was moved to Zoo Atlanta in 1994. if Anastasia, Ollie, Quentin, and Gus (aka the League of Beastly Dreadfuls) can decipher the clues and figure out how to open it. The witches have long since been banished, but deep in the darkest, most forbidden back alleys of Nowhere Special lies Calixto´s mysterious, unbreakable glass cabinet. The League of Beastly Dreadfuls is an odd book, the kind that delights in its oddness and gleefully rubs its oddness in the faces of its readers. In Lyra‘s world, she always has her demon, Pentalimon, and we meet them again sitting on the roof of the Jordan College. She met Will and they went through the land of the dead together, until at the end of ‘His Dark Materials’, they returned to their own worlds with a promise to meet each other in spirit at least once a year. Just to re-capture the background, Lyra Belaqua was a bright twelve-year-old child living at Jordan college, Oxford from where her destiny took her to travel to North Pole of her world, making friends with Polar bears, Witches and Gyptians on the way, until she stepped through to other worlds. The other things might be connected with the story, or they might not they might be connected to stories that haven’t appeared yet. This book contains a story and several other things. Published as a beautiful cloth covered collector’s edition book by Random House, Lyra’s Oxford contains a short story called ‘Lyra and the Birds’, a pull-out map and a few other things like advertisements for books and travel catalogs, a postcard written by Dr Mary Malone, a brochure for cruise ship Zenobia, etc. This passage describes the world created by Philip Pullman in his fantastic trilogy “ His Dark materials” so succinctly, it makes a perfect opening for this short story set in the magical Oxford where Lyra has come back to live after the war ended at end of “ The Amber Spyglass“. He doesn't consult her feelings, and acts in an autocratic, paternalistic manner which is probably indicative of the times. Her father has different ideas and wants what HE thinks is best for her. (I hope the following doesn't contain spoilers?!) As adolescents, Florentino and Fermina fall in love. A young person might regard it as romantic. Though it seems never to be conveniently contained, love flows through the novel in many wonderful guises - joyful, melancholy, enriching, and ever surprising. With humorous sagacity and consummate craft, Gabriel García Márquez traces an exceptional half-century of unrequited love. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he does so again. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. As he rises in his business career, he whiles away the years in 622 affairs - yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. From the Nobel Prize-winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude comes a masterly evocation of an unrequited passion so strong that it binds two people's lives together for more than half a century. |
